Web Design Hard? Try Using This Advice!

There are few things that have taken the world by storm as the Internet has. There are websites that cover just about any topic you can think of. There is no limit to what you can do when you learn the basics of web design. This article contains suggestions that will benefit you.

Keep the size of your web pages small. A lot of modern web pages are full of unnecessary elements, including huge images, Flash advertising, and lots of AJAX. Many people, especially those in rural areas and other countries with less-developed internet infrastructure, don’t have high-speed Internet and will have to wait forever for a large page to load.

Visitors want to have access to a website quickly, which is why your pages should load easily. If your website takes ages to load, they will wash their hands of your site and find one that loads in a reasonable amount of time.

Don’t pile on the graphics. You want the site to look professional and well-designed instead of cluttered. Graphics are not to be used for decorative purposes only. They need to add true content to the site. Your site will be easier to navigate too if you keep the graphic clutter to a minimum.

Use a descriptive title. Many site owners forget to name their pages, or name them something generic, such as “Welcome Page.” Search engines do use title descriptions in their rankings, so make sure you are as descriptive as possible, without going overboard. Make sure it is usable for your viewers and the search engines.

JavaScript is a great tool, but don’t overuse it. JavaScript does open many doors when it comes to website design, but it can also close the door to your website for some visitors. Web browsers are all different, and each comes out with new versions pretty regularly. You can’t expect that your website visitors are going to have the most updated versions of their browsers. Also, consider that JavaScript isn’t regularly enabled in everyone’s browser. These two things mean that some users won’t be able to use your site.

If you believe your site may be accessed via mobile devices, you will want to keep your designs simple. The use of flash, excessive images, and complicated menus will not translate well to a mobile platform. Keep your page clean and simple, or create a specific mobile site for your users.

Be sure your website works both with and without the “www” prefix. Some people will type this in before they head to your site as a force of habit, and some may not. You should make sure that customers will be directed to your site either way, or you may have some confused people on your hands.

Optimize your website for older IE versions. Most people do not like Internet Explorer, but others still use it. You will have to use workarounds when dealing with this issue, so keep that in mind. Specifically, you’ll want to know about IE’s “box model bug.”

If you know the basics of website design, it’s not hard to make a site. Your site will be even better when your skill improves. Design a terrific site by applying the principles shared here.
